Nick I do not know where your located but $250 will not rent any ground in North-East Iowa that will produce a crop. The sugar sand is renting in the $350 range here and it takes perfect growing season for it to yield. In a year without July rains it will yield ZERO.
I wish everyone could farm and make a profit/living grain farming but it is not going to happen in today's grain market. The market price of corn/soybeans has fallen faster than the input cost have. Established farmers with their numbers all worked out are going to struggle to make profits this year and maybe next year too. We are on the down hill side of a boom market. The one to make it are the ones that saved the profit from the "up" side of the boom.
Your a young fellow just wait a while for things to stabilize and then try what your wanting to do.
