Could be as simple as the clutch linkage needs adjusting. There should be just a little freeplay at the top of the pedal stroke, just enough the release bearing is not riding on the pressure plate fingers.
If the pedal is now lower than it was, and there is a grinding sound when the pedal is pushed, the release bearing is bad. This will mean splitting the tractor to replace.
Could be the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft is bad, again, split the tractor.
Or, a problem with the pressure plate or clutch disc, you guessed it, split the tractor...
Whatever it is, if a simple adjustment doesn't fix it, you're looking at a fairly major repair. This is not an area to take short cuts, very labor intensive. Best to fix it right once!
