: Again, I don't know much about these and have an interest in ultimately getting a small little workhorse to use around a 2 acre tract of (currently wooded) land. Here is a reply to a posting on another web page that may be of help... You can get a 14 hp cast iron block Kohler Magnum and a 48" deck gear drive (cast iron tranny) for around $3400. Most salesmen will tell you that 14 hp is not enough ponies for a 48 in deck. You can get a Wheel horse 314 at a reasonable price and it has many attachments available.
I agree. I have a '97 Wheel Horse 314 (14hp) and mowed an old farm yard yesterday. The grass was between 6 to 12 inches and very wet (from the prior nights rain). The engine NEVER showed any strain. My deck is a 42" rear discharge and so I can trim on both sides of the deck and due to the large rear opening, there is never any clogging. Considering the 314's ability to accept so many attachments (including ground engaging), it's heavy duty cast iron transmission, steel frame and cast iron front axle and on and on and on, plus great tech support via dealer or 800 number, it is a great value and a life time investment. Good luck, Bill" Again, good luck, Bill
