Mostly just luck . The low side is a sprag style overrunning clutch. Any over running clutch is just a wedging of rollers or balls or in this case,(you could call them double ended dogs). When it is over running in direct drive, the dogs are merely allowing the gear to slide over the dogs. When you disengage the high side, that gear trys to go the other direction and the dogs wedge in between gear inside diameter and clutch drum hub and stop it from turning backwards, thus it pulls. Not a very scientific explanation but basically how any overrunning clutch works. When it no longer is able to grab and wedge in place it slips. It will more than likely start to act up again shortly.
