Roy if I would have read this before John T. I would of said the same thing he said. If you loose spark to one plug the other one would be dead too...
I would check your compression on both cylinders when engine is cold and then when engine is hot and it stops on you.
A clogged vent on a fuel cap can cause the gasoline to build pressure or a vacum in the gas tank, either one will kill the engine. I have also seen a kinked fuel line do this or something floating around in the gas tank that covers the fuel discharge hole, water in the gas will do this also...
I have seen spark plugs become coated black from cheap low octane fuel that will cause a miss or backfire on these small engines and early Farmall & John Deere 2 cylinder tractors. I buy the highest octane fuel for my mower and older tractors and eliminated the problem. You can use Octane Booster from Wal-Mart which I have done and it works. Only add the recommended amount though because you can add too much and cause the same problem. The plugs will get coated with a rusty color if too much is added.
