I will check valve clearance tomorrow night. If the clearances are within tolerance, I will take it out and run it until it acts up again. If it does that I will check compression on the cylinder that acts dead when I pull the plug wires one at a time. If there is too little clearance, is the only way to fix the problem, to remove the head, take the valve or valves out and shorten them either by filing or grinding a very little off of it? I know it's likely to need carbon and other crap removed to be sure it is metal to metal when checking the clearance if and when the modifications need to be done. I have lapped valves to get them in good condition on automobile engines and expect this is a similar, but smaller job. I will also rule out the other possibilities suggested here.
