: : Well said, and 30 degrees is the usual dwell angle for a V8. The dwell angle is another means of measuring point gap. It was an especially useful way to set the points on a GM engine which had the screw adjustment which could be changed from outside the distributor. On other makes, it's really just another means of checking to see if the point gap is correct. Set your M points carefully with a CLEAN feeler guage, and they'll be okay. : Hey Folks, Dwell can be used to set the points in a window-less distributor by removing the cap, grounding the lead from the coil and cranking the engine. Points set in this manner are much more accurate as it eliminates operator feel, irregular contact patch and awkward hand manulipations...Eddie Petty Eddie, John and Peter are all correct, In My college auto classes, Dwell was defined as the amount of time, Measured in Degrees of rotation that the points remain closed, I agree that in comparison, point gap is a very crude method to set points, Keep in mind that 2 degrees of dwell variation will effect ignition timing 4 degrees due to the distributor turning at half of crank speed. How many people check their timing after setting point gap? A slight variation in point Gap can effect your timing greatly.
