Keep in mind that 2 degrees of dwell variation will effect ignition timing 4 degrees due to the distributor turning at half of crank speed

Actually, that 2 degrees of dwell variation is split between the position the points close and the position they reopen, so only 1 degree goes towards retarding the timing. Then multiply by two for the ratio between the distributor and the crankshaft and you are back where you started at 2 degrees.
