I am constantly hearing on various blogs about the horrible cold start tendencies of the JD's and jokes about how much ether it takes to get them going. Pop had an early 4020 and we also had a 4010 with the M&W turbo. The 4010 started reasonably well in cold weather and the 4020 was the best cold starting tractor we ever owned. It had to be down around 0 degrees before ether was needed and very little of it then. This tractor had no pre-heater and no block heater, but it started no matter how cold it got. A close friend has a 3130 and that thing is a horrible cold starting engine. I've heard the 4430 was pretty bad also. At what point did JD change their engine design to mess up their cold starting or is this just BS I am hearing? I think the worst cold starting tractors I personally ever saw were the IH 656 and an Allis 6080. The IH 656 was purchased new, but the 6080 was purchased at an auction so that one may have had other problems.
