Comments on the stock trailer subject reminded me of an accident I was almost involved in last year. Freeway traffic, I saw an interesting load up ahead, I was in the middle lane, load was in the right lane. Late afternoon city traffic moving fast, right lane was slowing because of exit up ahead. I noticed stopped traffic ahead of the load glanced to my left and left lane was empty. Looked back as I approached the load, turned out to be three or four new bale trailers on a long gooseneck pulled buy a 1 ton Dodge. Saw blue smoke coming from the Dodge tires and he slid to about a 30 degree angle before hitting the car in front of him that had stopped.
Here's the interesting part to me, he hit the car in front of him and with his truck at 30 degrees to the direction of travel, the momentum of the load pushing straight ahead flipped his truck to 90 degrees in a flash with his front bumper almost in the center of my lane. I was pretty sure the left lane was empty from my glance so I avoided the wreck but I am still surprised how fast the trailer continued to force the truck forward jackknifing it in the process.
