There are many reasons a battery can blow. Could have just been a defective battery.
But when you get around to replacing it, look things over for any evidence of a major short to ground before connecting it. Be sure the non grounded cable is not shorting to ground. The battery should be strapped to the battery box so it can't bounce around and short the cable or post.
Once running, check the charging system to be sure it is not over charging. If it is still 6 volt, the voltage should level out at around 8 volts with the engine revved up. If it's 12 volt, it should be around 14 volts.
