I saw a battery blow. The one I saw had a fast charger on it, electrolyte was bubbling, producing hydrogen gas. When my brother hit the key to start the car, sparks from the charger clamps lit hydrogen and there went the battery. Luckily it was very cold outside, so we viewed the explosion from inside his car. Battery acid bubbling all over my dad's garage floor.
My 2 cents, most batteries don't blow with out a spark and a hydrogen cloud inside and around battery. So what causes the cloud, charging or discharging? I'll let the experts weigh in on that.
