(Greg1959) - You make a good point there. Thankfully, I am out far enough that it shouldn't be a major worry but I learned from my uncle on that one. One year he thought he'd smart and have a field of pumpkins. That was, until the city folk drove by at night and took all the pumpkins!
I do like the ideas of having a variety and talking to the ag dept. Those are things I can start on over the next year while planning.
One other question is crop rotation. How small is too small? To keep a balance, I figure I'd need to have some kind of rotation planned. Grass hay grows, but I'd think anything else would need a good cycle to stay healthy. Good quality Timothy hay sells well around here, but that takes a good plan to keep it healthy.
