This post is mainly geared towards discussion and maybe some good ideas come from it. Little history, my parents own a dairy farm. When I came of age, not enough there to support all of us so college, college lead to job, job leads to career, and all is well except I miss the field/tractor work that comes with farming. They still farm and I help out as needed on evenings during the summer. Typical story.
Currently live on an acre lot with my family, and now I collect tractors. I have 5, two big ones, 3 small ones and that number is sure to grow over time. I would love to be able to "use" them in a hobby farm type fashion. Whether it be 2 acres or 25 acres, I think it would be nice to have a place to use antique equipment for a hobby/demo type environment while maintaining my day job. Sure I am not the only one that has this idea.
The question (finally):
I am not independently wealthy so while I would not need to support the family off of this land, I would need to make it self sustaining (sell hay/produce/etc.). Land for rent isn't exactly cheap, most gets gobbled up by local crop farmers, and every time I want to dip my toe into these waters, it just doesn't seem plausible. The initial investment would be the hardest part I think. The bank would laugh at me; it would need to be a full time venture.
Has anyone rented a small plot of land and had a small, self sufficient hobby farm? I am pretty sure I could make it sustain itself, but acquiring the land always stops the idea dead. Thoughts? Approaches you took?
