You post an interesting and provocative rebuttal, Paul. HOWEVER......I question some of your statements.
First, I can see how it would level the playing field to remove subsidies. You say that it is not possible. I say that most subsidies are there to appease congressmen to "bring home the bacon" to their home districts. In short, pork barrel legislation. Cut the pork and the subsidies may well go away. Subsidies are also used to encourage or stimulate a specific segment of the economy. These come in the form of tax breaks. Deducting home mortgage interest from personal income taxes is a prime example. It stimulates and encourages home ownership. I dislike subsidies because they interfere with a free marketplace and prevent prices from seeking their own natural levels.
Second, I seriously take exception to your statement that ethanol is a "big success." How can it be such a "success" when it is forced upon the population. Given a choice, and a free market, ethanol would FAIL EVERY TIME. Going all the way back to the 1970s, "gasohol" was offered on a limited basis as an experimental alternate fuel. Twice so far, it has failed to make it to the mainstream. Given a choice at non-manipulated pricing, ethanol would not prevail. Were it not for the Renewable Fuels Act of 2007, ethanol would have failed this time around as well. I would call that a government mandated version of success.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
