I have had much better luck using a product that is MADE to fix/repair fuel tank holes. That product is called SEAL ALL. On larger holes clean around the edges to bare metal. Then apply some seal all around the edge, then take screen wire and cover the hole an push it into the seal all you applied around the edges. Let that cure. Then apply the seal all over the screen wire working it into the wire. You can apply several coats and build it up as much as you want.
I had a Ford car with large holes under the mounting straps. They basically where the entire length of the tank. Some were as big as 2 inches in diameter. I repaired it like I out lined and the patch is still holding 38 year later.
