: I just purchased a Ford 861 Diesel. I noticed a very slight metal-on-metal clicking noise when I test drove the tractor. I have since brought the tractor home and the noise has gotten so bad I won't even run the tractor. I am pretty sure the source of the noise is the fan blade hitting the cowling around the radiator. I can move the fan blade shaft about 1/2" up and down. I don't have the parts manual, so I can't tell how the fan shaft is attached to the water pump. The water pump is firmly bolted to the engine block. Can bad bearings in the water pump cause this problem? Or are there other possible causes? Good thing to stop running engine! Sounds like bad bearing in water pump. Like other post, fan shaft should NOT move up and down. Fan bolts to the pump pulley, just be careful to align the small buttons on the fan with the alignment holes in the pulley you will see when you take apart. (fan will vibrate excessively if buttons are NOT in holes) Pulley is supplied with new pump. Pump # is CDPN8501C.
