Big Tee: I hate to tell you this but the original JD cylinders are repairable without any cutting or welding. All you have to do is remove the hydraulic fitting in the side of the cylinder. Slide the ram to where the end is at the hole where you removed the fitting. Look down in the hole and you will see a snap ring in a grove that has another grove right beside it that is smaller. The snap ring is one of the round wire ones. All you do is take a screw driver and flip the snap ring into the lower grove. The ram will then pull out the end. Replace the seal rings and put the ram back in. Push it down and pop the snap ring back up into the top grove an your done.
There used to be several of the JD 6500 sprayers around here. I got to where I could change the seals in under an hour a side. with out removing the base from the machine. I just made stops to put on one cylinder to hold the boom up while I worked on the opposite one.
This style of one way cylinder is common on JD equipment. The most common being the header lift cylinders on combines.

Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic circuit. They take the fluid power delivered from the pump and magically change it into mechanical power. There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
