The old starter can be left as-is, but you'll need to change the coil to a 12 volt, or else install a ballast resistor in series with the existing 6 volt coil. And if you have lights you'll have to replace them with 12 volt units. : I've converted several H's and M's to 12 volts and have been delighted with the results. : Bob
