You may not have a charging problem. If the battery is charged to 8 volts the 6 volt system won't charge until the battery voltage has dropped to 6 volts. To adjust the regulator; remove the cover, identify the field coil (it's the coil with fine wire windings, the heavy wire coil is the low voltage cut-out relay), the coil contact points have a tension adjustment that you must adjust (could be a screw or a metal tab), with the engine at a fast idle and the lights on adjust the regulator so you have about 9 volts at the battery. Make adjustments with the engine stopped and battery disconnected unless you like fireworks and burned up generators/regalutors. Also small adjustments and don't let system voltage exceed 10 volts as field coil burn-out soon after. As has been said here before the 8 volt upgrade is a nice compromise between slow cranking 6 volts and a major conversion to 12 volts. Good luck and keepem runnin, Lee : I've been working on a Super M that has an 8 volt battery, thing is it dosn't charge, I've narrowed it down to the regulator, since I can create charge by exciting the field. So, I've decided on a new regulator, how do I make sure it's set for 8 volt? They don't have an 8 volt one.... : : : : : Have heard that M's can be converted to 8 volts : : : for easier starting. Want to keep near original : : : but still be useable. comments please. : : Just have your voltage regulator reset for 8v works fine.
