Easy rule of thumb to remember years is: thirty 9 = 9N, fourty 2 = 2N, fourty 8 = 8N. Main difference between 9N and 2N are in the electrical system. Since the tractor serial is on the engine block, and all flathead engines can be made to fit the serial doesn't mean much unless the history is known. I was a Ford tractor parts man for years and have seen some strange combo's. Early 9N with side distributor 8N engine, and an NAA from grille to flywheel and 9N from there back, they'd made pipes from the bottom of the 9N trans case to feed the live pump on the NAA engine.
