Got a blowout on a drivers side tire on my pickup near Livington, Montana- busy highway, not much shoulder, so I drove down a fairly steep grade on the side of the road to a flat spot on the bottom, probably 10 feet below the highway grade, and 50 feet off to the side. Was changing the tire, and a cop pulled up. He came down and checked me out pretty good- he thought I had run off the road, might be drunk, etc. I told him what happened, and that the shoulder was just wide enough for the pickup, but my rear would have been hanging out in the road. Seemed to satisfy him- he held a flashlight and gave me a little help with the tire, then waited to make sure I could get back up to the highway (4WD, no sweat), then wished me a good evening.
Had a gun drawn on me once, when I was in college. Going back to WSU on I84, east of Portland, cop went by from the other direction, spun a U turn in the middle of the road, came roaring up with lights and siren (overkill for speeding, I was thinking), started screaming at me to "show my hands", I looked in rearview mirror and he was crouched behind the open door of his car, with pistol aimed at me! (Definite overkill, says I). I stuck both hands out the open window, eventually got out of the car without being shot, "hands on the roof, feet back and spread 'em". Turns out a kid had broken out of Rocky Butte jail in Portland, stolen a car that looked a lot like my bronze '57 Poncho. We both eventually calmed down, he asked me what my route would be, said he would put it out over the air. I did get a long look somewhere west of Walla Walla, but then that cop smiled and waved (after looking in his book and scoping out my license no.)
Sorry I can't add to the discussion with a bad cop story, but I've had pretty good luck with them. Even the state trooper who gave me a speeding ticket on 101- she was such a looker that it was almost a pleasure!

Today's Featured Article - Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
