. My tractor is a L3400 with standard shift. My initial problem started when I was drilling post holes and hit a rock, killing the engine. Engine would not start again. NO ACTION WHEN TURNING THE KEY TO "START" Found .5 amp to fuel solenoid blown. Replaced fuse, no help. Did some checking of the safety switches and realized I had not shut off the PTO. AHA. No help. Trouble shot seat switch and found broken wire. Found I could twist all three wires together, turn the key to on and hot wire the starter and it would start and run. Replaced seat switch Still no response to key "start". Have to "hot wire" the starter. Operated this way for a few days While operating this way, key switch became very erratic. Engine would start to die and had to jiggle the key to keep it running. Replaced the key switch -- -no help. The toggle safety switch and PTO switch seemed to be working so, looking at wiring schematic, starter relay seemed like only thing left. Replaced- - - no help. Troubleshot the wiring at the starter relay and found no ground at the ground wire terminal. If I ran a wire directly from ground terminal on the relay to a known ground-- -WAHLA "key start" worked, so now I m sure the problem lies somewhere in the safety switch circuit but the book diagram is not very helpful in tracking this down. Went back and checked the PTO switches there are two- - don t know why . Both had continuity with PTO off and no continuity when lever moved but never went to ground. Sounds right to me. Went back to toggle switch on the fender, crossed the two terminals - -no help, grounded the two terminals, no help. I GIVE. HELP.

Rollins, son of the landowner, used the tractor. In the winter 1985, while in his possession the engine block cracked and was unrepairable. He had told my father
