My uncle is a retired Electrician he did 7 years in the army and 20 in the air force then worked Civil service till he went to contract work for them as a electrician. It all came to a end when his vision went down hill.
He brought a Generac Gen from Lowe's he played his miltary discount at both Home Depo and lowe's and got a deal from lowe's when all in said and done on a 16KV gen with a auto transfer switch.
I picked it (Loader tractor involved) up built a pad for it got him a battery installed it all that was left for me was to resister it on line enter the code and program it to run once a week.
He hired a electrician to wire it up then the gas co. hooked the gas up. They had put a 100 amp disconnect between the meter and the transfer switch I had already programmed it all that left for me was to test it out. I put the 70amp breaker on the gen to on and told him to flip the disconnect off. The gen fired up it was cold and raining after a min are so I smelled burning wires looked at the transfer switch and it was smoke'N ! I removed the cover off the transfer switch a big coil had roasted. Then it it me from what little I read and understood about the transfer switch is it had a removable leaver to set the transfer switch. It does not have any warnings about were it should be set but I would have thought it should be set to gen but that never crossed my mind.
All I could think of was the switch on the transfer was set to utility's it should have been on GEN. It went up in smoke.
He went to Lowe's Lowe's called a service man from out of town he came that day looked it over replaced the burnt up coil it not works as it should. (he had a coil on his truck) The service man said it was hooked up correctly the coil that makes the transfer must have been bad.
This could have got chitty and stunk bad I am going to take him out for a biscuit in the more I will take a pix of the transfer switch.
I want to see were the service guy has the switch set. I think that was the issue BUT NO WARNING anywhere to be found.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
