Life is full of firsts. My brother was 10 years my elder and could out do me, but I learned. Dad chewed me out for piling loose bales, but I learned. When I hooked the fence with the plow there was retribution, but I learned. Then had to fix the fence. When I got involved in sports other than wrestling dairy cattle twice a day I got bested by bigger, faster, stronger participants. All those trials, failures, and successes of my youth shaped my future and while I don't think I'll run for office I can hold my own.
With my children I've tried to pass on what I've learned, but every time they have to bandage a finger, pick them selves up, or fix a big screw up I still ask, "what did you learn?"
My eldest sister was in education for years and now retired. Her view is that society created this soft centered mess we have now when every kid got a scratch and sniff sticker on their paper. I just remember the nun with the ruler!
