IH's problems in large part go back to the stockholders as well as top management. Taking on too many lines that they could not effectively manage goes back to management. The R & D falls on the stockholders but management did drive down many dead end roads there such as developing a battery powered tractor. Also, going with the Hydro came at the cost of not having powershift by the time the 66 series came out. By the time the 2 plus 2 tractors came out the research budget was very small in terms of building a new design plus the offset MFWD on the 86 series had limitations due to the offset driveshaft so turning was more difficult than it should have been. I got this from two people that I knew who both had deep connections with IH at its Chicago headquarters.
