Ah but a lot of the 2+2 was off the shelf parts, meaning a lot of the drive train was shared with regular 2WD tractors they just used 2 in a 2+2 vs 1 in the conventional tractor. But I do agree with you they rested on their laurels to long. They were late coming up with a live/IPTO system and the TA was innovative but a powershift trans was a logical progression and they didn't get it to market in time to preserve their lead in the market. Combine that with problematic tractors in '59 and Deere's new generation hitting in one trade cycle of the 560 debacle. Silly thing is they could of amortized the power shift transmission development costs between AG and truck, or we could consider the whole Hydro trans was a solution to the need that wasn't adequate and the money spent on it came from R&D costs of more viable products. For them to stay relevant the 06 tractors should of come out when the 460/560 did to deal with the Deere new generation head one, instead they ended up playing catch up. That combined with a greedy union that couldn't see the writing on the wall and a strike that put the company in financial distress they could't recover from.
