I've always dreamed of dropping a 4bt Cummins in an M to get better fuel efficiency... Our 544 is pretty easy on the gasoline, but the tax break on diesel is nicer. Thinking I may rake with the 1256 this year, shift up and throttle down will probably equal the 544 for efficiency. Your 686 has the German diesel, correct? Friend of mine had a hydro 86 w/German that was pretty decent on the fuel for being a hydro.
