The workers at Cat have been organized labor for decades. The company had been profitable through 2011 when Cat faced a serious strike. Wages at the time were competitive, and labor wanted a larger piece of the profit pie. I'm guessing things weren't one sided, but I do know that the US workers were told that if they stuck to their guns on wages and new health costs, that Cat would send work offshore.
This is the same refrain faced by US steelworkers in the 70s when they shut down Bethlehem, and US Steel in the same year. Now, more steel comes out of S Korea than PA, and 5 times more steel comes out of China than PA. I wonder, if the workers in PA knew at the time, would they have stayed the course? Labor participation after the steel mills were shut down was the lowest in state history. I don't want to place all the blame on labor, but it can't all be the fault of ownership/execs.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
