About 30 years ago I had to replace the engine in my 1/2 ton 1969 Chev 4x4. The shop I took it to wanted to know if it was ok to use a 307 block. I said fine with me but use the same components as was in the original 327. When he got done with it and I drove it 30 miles home I notice it was running real warm on temp gage. I thought it would run cooler after I put a few miles on it. It continued to run way to the right on temp gage. I took it back and said it needed to be fixed. He said its not a problem, drive it. I said ok but if it blows, you will replace it. Finally he checked it and adjusted the timing and it run much better. I wanted to know what the timing was that he set it at and he wouldn't give me an answer. That was the best engine I could ask for, that pickup would run 110 mph with no problem. Wished I could tell you what he put in it for components.
When I would replace the plugs and points, I never touched the timing. There were no marks!
