30 years ago last month I bought a junkyard Olds 403 gas engine to replace the ailing diesel 350 that was in the 81 GMC pickup. I don't know how many miles that 403 had when I bought it but the odometer in the truck has turned over at least once since I installed it and that engine just won't quit. Other than a camshaft, timing gears and lifters, I've not replaced anything major. Heads have never been off. I've had to rebuild the th350 transmission and get the lockup converter working. Now that Olds will cruise all day at 2700 rpm and average 17 mpg. Its got all the power and more I ever need too. Good luck trying to find one that isn't worn out now though. I think they quit making the Olds 403 in 1979.
