This is sort of an addition to my post below, about getting a cylinder head valve job done on an IH C221 head.
What are the signs of a good machine shop? How do you tell it's a shop that will do what needs to be done, including the things that the customer may not necessarily know to ask for? I only occasionally (every two years or so) need something machined, so I don't get a chance to "check out" which shops are the best.
Or if it's a shop that only wants to "move it in, move it out" as quickly and the most profitable way possible?
I've found out that "word of mouth" recommendation isn't always the best.
A couple years back, I took in a Farmall M head. Everyone told me "take it to Joe's". So when I get there, it's a dark poorly lit shop. Blocks, cylinder heads, flywheels are laying around everywhere. Some look like they've been sitting for years. Hard to walk through the shop, because of all the junk. When I got my M head back, it leaked. He hadn't done a crack check, or planed it. When I told him, he said "you didn't ask for that".
I had ordered camshaft bearings from the guy. Took forever to come. He always said "they'll be here next week". I think he simply forgot or didn't bother to order them.
So, how does someone who's not an expert mechanic know that a shop is a good one?

Some have been very good, some have been well, disappointing to say the least. But no matter how good or bad auctions may be, we always seem to stay until the item we've come for or are interested in is on the block. I've been to some auctions near and far. I think the furthest has been the Two Cylinder 7 in the Amana Colonies last year. Lots of stuff, lots of people. I've also atten
