JD, In 2011 I had the same problem. Straight winds damaged two homes and 3 garages. Trees put sky lights in the houses and garages. Pulled electric service down.
I hauled 25 dump trailer loads of branches to a place that grinds them up for mulch because my insurance wouldn't pay for any trees not on buildings. I also had tree trimmer remove the trees on the houses.
That's when I decided I really hate any tree that can fall on my buildings. I spent over $10k having trees removed or seriously trimmed back.
A year before, I changed insurance companies. I went to Indiana Farmers Insurance and I'm glad I did. They were a great company to work with. All I had to pay for was the deductible.
Lawn mowers damage trees. When a mower strikes tree trucks or roots, the tree will suffer. I had a Chinese elm removed last month. The tree was in bad shape, thanks to tenants and lawn mowers.
A front loader with forks will make cleaning up your mess easier than doing it all with mussels. I also use a landscape rake attached to forks to push the sticks in a pile to pick up with loader.
