Today in 1944 the USS England DE-635 sinks Japanese submarine I-16 in the waters off Bouganville in the Solomon Islands. England will go on to sink 5 more Japanese subs in that area over the course of the next 12 days making her the killingest little sub hunter of all time. On her 5th kill, after her squadron mates could not get a hit on a known sub, the squadron commander radioed England and says "Oh hell England, you might as well have your try." And in her first attack England destroys the sub. I have often wondered about the combination of factors and circumstances that made this little ship such an effective sub killer. Surely there was luck. And pluck. But there were other factors too. From a good commanding officer who was able to keep his crew trained to a razor's edge and work off a hunch to the radar and sonar men who maybe knew their jobs better than those on other ships and even the technicians who kept the the eyes and ears of the ship in better than tip top shape. England will go on with her duties as an escort ship for almost another year untill in May of 45 on picket duty off Okinawa she'll be hit by a Kamikaze that kills 37 men and wounds 25. The ship survives but is sent back to the States for repairs which effectively put it out of the closing war. Give a thought to those young men on the little England who are in a life and death struggle with the enemy and celebrating their first victory, 73 years ago today.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
