Western Iowa has a lot of old county bridges, many are in poor condition with posted weight limits. The replacement costs start at a quarter million $ on up. Think about how the replacement costs are split: the state pays half (from state income taxes) and the county pays half (from local property taxes)? A few $ for a permit and a designated routing to avoid falling through any old bridges seems worthwhile to save the local taxpayers some unnecessary expenses.
