We have a lot of rye cover crop being planted in the fall. Neighbor across the road lost 80 acres of corn in the 3 - 4 leaf stage Wednesday and Thursday. The worms cleaned it to the ground in just hours - like over night. They sprayed it and replanted it this weekend. Growing point was still below the ground and it was coming back, but the I think they just wanted everything to be at one growth stage. Some places didn't have the best stand due to planting it a little wet the first time. I am immediately across the road and have no feeding on my corn what so ever, although it was not planted in a cover crop field. In another field across the road I did have a cover crop and it is planted to soybeans. The beans were planted early last week. My cover crop was terminated (sprayed) about 10 days prior to planting. Reports are that army worms will and are eating soybeans. Anyone have experience with soybeans and army worms???? This is about 25 miles south west of Iowa City, Iowa. I might add that others have had army worm problems in their corn as well this spring. Thanks for any ideas or what to look for.

Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
