If the oil was low enough to get air in the pump, you may just be hearing the pump compressing the air.
If the oil looks frothy, that is a sure sign of air in the system. Any idea how the level got low? If there is a leak in the suction side of the pump it could be still pulling in air when running, but that should show up as a leak when shut off.
There is no real way to get air out of the oil other than let it naturally migrate out when sitting, and it eventually will. If that is all that is wrong, it will eventually clear up as long as no air is being drawn in.
Now if there is a mechanical failure, that will sound more metallic, and will show as glitter in the filter. Not what you want to see!
