I have been searching for a used ATV for my wife and have just about given up. We have 60 acres of wetlands and forest in the Michigan eastern upper peninsula. Our land is surrounded by thousands of acres of Federal forest and you can go forever with a small four wheeler.
I bought a mid-80s 230 cc Suzuki a few years back for $350 and love it. Does all I need. I put a metal grocery-basket on the back and carry tools, chainsaw, etc. I had to put new tires and a battery on it - but that is all.
I then picked up a Honda Fourtrax 200 cc to fix up. Have not got around to it yet. Needs tires. brakes, and has a transmission leak and I paid $450 for it. I have ridden it and it does all we need. About the same size as the Suzuki.
My wife never cared about an ATV until now. I am looking to get three ATVs and leave them at our place in the UP. This year is so wet - much of our trails cannot be walked (without hip-boots).
I have been searching for a few months for another used ATV and find nothing worth buying for under $1500 and even those deals are rare. $3000 is more the usual asking price for a running 20-30 year-old machine.
So, I am seriously thinking about getting a new Chinese ATV. I can buy one brand new, 250 ccs, delivered to my door, for $1300. Price is pretty amazing.
Two years ago I went through the same issues trying to find a small ATV for my little kid. I found nothing used and wound up buying a new Chinese ATV with a 125 cc engine. It has run flawlessly. Only bad side is the first battery only lasted one year, and all the bolts need Loctite added or they fall off. This model only has forward and reverse. My kid has outgrown it and it is too small for rough trails.
One thing I do not understand is the terminology used for transmissions. The new Chinese model I am looking at has a four speed trans and "manual" . Does anyone make an ATV with a real manual clutch that is operated by hand like a motorcycle? Or is it just a centrifugal clutch that stops when you let off the gas even when in gear? That is how my Suzuki and Honda both work.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
