I'm kind of like you Philip. I've replace numerous timers on the old style machines. Latch broke on the dryer door. Piece of velcro screwed to the side fixed that problem. Replaced a belt, idler pulley when the dryer was making a terrible grinding noise etc. Every time the wife said, "need a new one". Eventually after about 20 yrs I gave in when she got that "look" and I knew the duct tape fix was not going to work that time.
Few years back, the knob broke on the "new" front loader dryer. I found an old stove someone was throwing out and grabbed a knob off of it. Fit perfectly and it doesn't matter that it has a temp scale on it (200,250, etc). Neighbor laughed when he saw it and gave me a knob off of an old stove he had. I saved it in a drawer. Well, guess what? Just the other day, the knob on the washer broke. Now I've got 2 laundry appliances with stove knobs but they work.
