: First, I want to thank everyone who offered suggestions to my problem. I tried them faithfully with no success. Then the manual I had ordered for the TO35 arrived. I read through it - still had no ideas. I decided to start all over and replace parts as I went. I started with the ignition system. When I replaced the rotor (the one on it looked new) I noticed the spark plug wires were not in sequence with what I had just read in the manual. (In my own defense, I have only worked on fords and my son had just purchased and delivered the TO35 to me. I never considered the plug wires were out of sequence.)I installed the wires correctly and off she went, purring like a new one. I still don't understand why the engine did not backfire with two plug wires reversed. I really do feel like an idiot. Don't be concerned about how you feel. Even the best mechanics have their days close to idiocy, but they try to keep enough tricks or steps in mind to keep them moving on the job and few will notice. Any customer will likely come back if you confess to your errors and are fair & honest with him.
