Just because "nothing bad happened" that one time you did it and got away with it does not mean that it is an acceptable way to haul, or that there isn't a better, more reliable, less risky way to do it that would be much better for a rank amateur.
Knowing what you can get away with comes with experience. The people asking about this are NOT experienced, or else they wouldn't be asking. Let them determine what they feel they can get away with after they get a feel for it. Of course by that time they already have the proper equipment, so it's a moot point.
