To some folks anything new came straight from the devil. I have run 10% ethanol for 30 years in everything on the farm that runs on gasoline. Have I had problems? Yes I have had a few problems with the accelerator pump diaphragms in older vehicles from the 70’s and earlier. I have seen the diaphragm in the automatic fuel shut offs in two banger Deere’s wrinkle up and look like tar. Those problems were solved with alcohol resistant diaphragms but I found I have to use a diaphragm that I KNOW is resistant, not one that I have been told will work. Rubber fuel lines are the same way.
As far as it going bad from sitting; the alcohol in ethanol itself is a pure product. It’s the crappy poor gasoline it’s mixed with that gives the problem. The gasoline ethanol is mixed with is poorly refined and the alcohol brings the octane up to the proper standards. Non ethanol gasoline is better refined to bring it up to the proper octane.
I have had some storage problems with our new gas but I can remember the awful smell from old gas from years ago too, I think though it took longer for the old gas to go bad.
Anyway, ethanol has been good for me but I have had to slightly alter some of my ways to make it work. If a person wants to be an old fuddy who doesn’t accept change and wants to remain in the past the regular non ethanol will probably help him feel better about the world.
Yes I’m a corn grower and half of my 2018 corn crop is contracted to an ethanol plant, I’ll lay it out on the table. But if ethanol did not work out for me I certainly wouldn’t use it. I will also say I live in a midwestern climate.
