Not an expert here, recently went through your problem with my '48 John Deere B, and D. I found that it is very important that your tractor be wired correctly for the regulator you are using, be it a cutout, a 3 terminal VR, or a 4 terminal VR. There aren't that many different regulators available for the 6 and 12 volt systems used in agricultural applications in the 40's and 50's. I have found online several detailed PDF manuals, explaining and illustrating different generator/regulator combinations from Delco Remy. I ended up contacting John Brillman, at the Brillman Company, to purchase high quality USA made voltage regulators for the tractors I was having Issues with, He was a little hard to get a hold of, but he provided me with the information, and Quality parts to get the charging systems on several of my old Tractors working perfectly, He really went out of his way to help, you should contact him...Tom
