Steve; I'm not an expert but the system was designed to take 6volts and that system worked great for all these yearss. I personnaly would keep it 6v. As for charging the battery, use a 6v charge on the bat.Keeo us posted on the project, I'm doing the same thing with a '49 S-a. Good luck
