: I have a wisconsin 16 hp. gas engine with no spark ! I replaced the coil . It has a magneto . I ohmed out the red wire coming from the coil and it shows ground ? its new . just paid 100.00 for the new coil please help! lol JOHN

John, a couple things to add to Marty's good info. Ohming the magneto coil is not easy. The primary is only a few ohms and the condensor is in parallel with it. I suggest you disconnect all connections and then measure it. You should see a few ohms on the primary (low tension side) and many ohms (don't remember, 10K?) on the secondary side. Also measure the condensor by using your ohm scale. First, put your meter on the highest ohm scale. Then measure the resistance of the condensor. You should see a momentary short, followed by increasing resistance until finally it looks open. You are using the ohmmeter battery to charge the condensor. Then, just to be sure, reverse the leads (turn the battery around) and repeat. You should see the same thing. If you are ok with all of this, you have two more variables. The points and the magnet. Both of mine looked ok and both were bad. I had to get the magnet recharged and had to replace the points, even though I couldn't measure anything wrong with them. Black magic I guess. Good luck.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
