Dick, The brakes can hang up as D. C. Dale suggested. If this problem occurs and you havn't used the brakes, we may need to take the diagnosis further. First, if the brake is the problem, you can take off the right running board and remove the brake cover to give that brake a quick inspection. Also, drive the tractor again with the brake cover off to see if the characteristic problem remains. If gone, then do some work on that brake. If the problem remains with the brake cover off, your problem has just been converted from a simple to major problem. I suspect the bull gear/pinion gear may be the problem. Take off the inspection plate again and look at the bull gear's teeth for any excessive wear. The teeth should be flat on the tops. If the top of the teeth have sharp edges, the wear may be causing the teeth of the pinion and bull gear to mesh incorrectly. Inspect the teeth on the pinion gear. If you can't see them from the rear inspection hole take off the big square plate under the brake assembly, remove the pinion gear/shaft and inspect the teeth for wear. Caution: Don't damage the shims under the big square plate. These shims are of a precise thickness to give proper pre-load to the tapered roller bearing on the pinion shaft. Chances are if a gear is worn it will be the pinion gear since it is smaller and has less teeth. Consequently, each pinion tooth is engaged more frequently than the teeth on the bull gear and will wear faster. Good luck! Ken McWilliams

: I own a Case 530 CK backhoe with a torque converter transmission. The problem is that when the tractor is slowing down, the right rear wheel locks up. If it is shifted into a low gear and shifted between forward and reverse, the wheel will break free with a load noise. The noise appears to be coming from the rear differential. I removed the differential cover plate for a look, but did not find anything that was obvious. No broken teeth or any metal parts in the bottom of the differential housing. I have owned this tractor for about 5 years and this problem just started. Once the wheel breaks free the tractor can be driven at any speed without any problems. Any ideas ?
