: : I have a Ford 640. My 3-point hitch does not lift all the time and when it does, it doesn't always lift all the way. What could it be?
: First thing to check is the oil level in the trans. I'm assuming that your tractor uses transmission/hydraulic oil, and the hydraulic system uses the tranmission as a reservoir. This is the usual method. If oil is low, there may not be enough to cycle the rockshaft completely. The intermittent nature of the problem might be related to the oil draining away from the pickup if the tractor happens to be on an incline when you're trying to lift the hitch.

Definitely check your fluid level first!

Many of the problems associated with the Ford hydraulic system center on the control and unloading valves. As an example, the slightest amount of corrosion on the valve surface inhibits the motion of the valve, resulting in the sort of problem you describe. Corrosion of the various hydraulic valves (there are six in the Ford hydraulic system) is very common.

The hydraulic system is one of the least understood subsystems on the vintage Ford tractor. Troubleshooting the hydraulic system becomes a lot easier when you understand the function of the various valves in the system. I have recently added a Hydraulics Page to my Web site which includes text and diagrams that (hopefully) will answer a few questions about valve function, valve position, and hydraulic oil flow through the system. You might take a look.

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner. ...
