As a good general rule, use Non Detergent oil in an engine that has no oil filter. when the engine sits over night some of the larger particles will settle out and sit as sludge in the bottom of the pan where they can be removed with a yearly cleaning. just drop the pan and wipe it out.When you use Non Detergent oil with NO oil filter you must change the oil more often than "normal". Use detergent oil in an engine WITH an oil filter.The detergent not only cleans the crud but it keeps it suspended and it gets trapped in the filter.The filter feeds clean oil to the bearings and the oil change interval is longer than without a filter. If you think the engine was used with NON detergent oil then drop the pan and clean it out. You wont be able to do much with the oil passages in the block unless you rebuild the whole thing and have it boiled and scrubbed out,but the filter should trap anything that gets loosened up.
