Bob/Johnny, this is good advice, however, many of the older tractors have the oil filter installed as a shunt circuit (from main oil gallery back to the crankcase as opposed to the lubrication circuit). If you are considering changing to detergent oil, dropping and cleaning the pan should be the first step. The main source of crankcase sludge (carbon) is normal ring blow by. Since non-detergent oils have poor suspension quality and drains are not always done while the oil is hot with particulates in suspension there is bound to be buildup. That is why many older engines had floating oil strainers. A better indicator of the cleanliness of the lubrication system is the top deck of the cylinder head. If you have other than condensation induced sludge there, beware. It is a good idea to know the lube path of your tractor's engine, location therein of the filter and the point that the oil pressure is monitored before changing to detergent oil. Joe
