JM...as has been stated, there are some good ones and bad ones out there. I've had the same experiences and am always amazed that when you call someone about a tractor for sale (or other item), it seems half the time, the owner is ticked off that you would even consider trying to give him/her money for their item! With dealers and/or slavage yards, you run into the same deal. As has been stated, the only thing you can do is move on to the next one and hope you hit a good one. With individuals its a one shot deal usually. With a dealer or a yard, once you find a good one, stick with 'em... they are out there. Good hunting! Woody in Ashland.
